I'm thinking of visiting Taiwan and Japan over the Christmas/New Year period this year.

One site I visited said that Japan goes very quiet from around the 28th Dec to 1st Jan and that most shops/activities are closed.

Is this correct?

Also, what would New Year's be like in Osaka? Anything special happen there?

Any other suggestions/warnings etc?
