More specifically, they allow one
redemption per year, regardless of the amount (500, 1000, 2000). IOW, you can't do one 1000 mile redemption early in the year, then another 1000 mile redemption later.

If you don't mind the extra steps, you could always redeem $100 erewards to 2000 AA miles, then transfer the 2000 AA miles to US miles via
www.points.com, though, as usual, the exchange rate is pretty bad (about 1:7).
