Anyway, I wasn't calling for "cutting him slack". I was calling for compassion. Maybe that means that instead of saying "good, the mentally ill deserve whatever they get", we say "there was no choice but to restrain him; it's unfortunate that this was necessary, but we recognize he didn't choose to be mentally ill".
Generally speaking, I think many people don't understand mental illness and sometimes find it strange, incomprehensible, even bizarre. Humans have a long history of fearing and hating the unknown and unfamiliar -- it's built into our psychology and hardwired into our body. Part of what I'm saying here is to have a little compassion for those who are different.
