This is an interesting website:
Worldmapper
Worldmapper is a collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest.
From a Flyertalk perspective, this is an interesting map:
Aircraft flights
which has the interesting titbit:
In 2000 civilian aircraft flew a total of 25 billion kilometres. If one person flew this distance they could circle the earth more than 630 000 times. If the total distance flown was divided equally between eveyone in the world, we would each fly four kilometres a year.
It's one of those websites where you can spend a while just clicking around the different maps. It would probably also answer many of the questions that pop up on here
