I'd prefer to do what we have to do to protect ourselves, but to temper it with a little bit of compassion for those who struggle with mental illness and to recognize that the actions needed to protect ourselves may be necessary but nonetheless regrettable.
Fortunately, we have medication to make the mentally ill no longer mentally ill (or to alleviate symptoms... however you want to look at it). I have no compassion for those who choose not to take their medication and then cause disruptions.
