They need to determine whether you are bringing something or not, and this is done by asking such questions.

Living in Vancouver as a student from Norway I normally get harassed coming into CANADA and almost never entering the United States. My record is 5 seconds I think. (They need to swipe my passport and control the I-94) Even on weekend trips to FL or daytrips to Seattle by car.
