I don't remember 80 yen per dollar, but I remember in the late 90s with 140 yen per dollar (of course, that didn't last long - a few months later, the Fed/BoJ intervened so it went back to 120). I remember it being like 103 per, and then a few years ago (2003?) with BoJ basically printing money and they wound up buying billions of dollars with the money.
