I guess it is:
1) The perceived "privacy" attached to having a password (not unlike a diary)
2) The sheer amount of information. If the documents on your computer were printed out, and the pictures printed actual size, I have a feeling most of us would have a least a couple of hundred pounds of paper.

All the more reason for strong encryption (e.g. NOT 3DES)
