Skipping the obvious/possible customs problems, what are the major pro/cons of purchasing a laptop in Japan for somebody living in US?

Is it even worth considering pricewise?

Not looking for all the bells and whistles, but not looking for the $500 Dell either.

Size is a very important factor. As small as possible. Japanese manufacturers seem to have the upper hand in that dept.
