I knew Bruce's (spot-on) explanation, but it didn't really make other than sort of sense until you saw those AA pilots waving the U.S. flag when they taxied out after 9/11 and flew the flag all over the country.

Somehow seeing it in person made it more correct in my mind. Then you knew the other way would look really weird.
