Do not drive into the centre of Rome. If you need to keep the car- park it at the airport and take the train into the centre followed by a taxi.
Car theft in the centre of Rome is a notorious problem. If you are driving a luxury car (ie Mercedes) it has even been known to be followed and attacked for the keys.
There are also many areas of the centre which are closed on various days.
Trust me on this one.
