Could they buy a NEW RT from their present location and not use the return portion. Sometimes rt's are much cheaper than ow's.
[It might be possible to cancel the return trip on their current ticket, credit the unused portion, less the penalty, toward the new rt. I don't know how a ticket already in use works under these circumstances. Some of the experts here on ft could chime in at this point .]
