some friends need to change their return ticket (already used the outbound) to extend their stay beyond the 120 days allowed, for medical reasons (undergoing cancer - chemo, dr. says she needs 6 more weeks of treatment)

AA CS says too bad, ticket is worthless past the 120 day limit and they will have to buy a one-way when she is ok to travel. (cost will be about $1200 for both of them)

Anyone have any luck getting a waiver or exception?

I'm trying to see if there's any history of exceptions for this particular rule, and if it's worth continuing the effort.

note: I've already tried asking for a supervisor and the word was still Not Possible to change the 120 limit.
