Bad idea. Oh, so very bad...

I had to share just once and while it wasn't awful (I liked my roommate) it was uncomfortable trying to manage the morning routine, give each other some privacy, see each other in nightwear while knowing you'd have to be in the office again with them Monday, etc.

Our company plays it both ways, depending on the departmental budget at any given time, apparently. And while they won't order men and women to share quarters, they have encouraged it (similarly, I am a heterosexual woman and my aforesaid roommate is a lesbian - very out and well known to the boss and office at large. I didn't care, but some women in our office certainly would have).

Another instance: On a three week-foreign assignment, a man and a woman having a prominent affair were quartered together. His wife also worked for the company.

It was not, to say the least, pretty.
