The company I worked with for a decade required it - and it could be a nightmare at times. On one or two occasions I had to bunk with someone from a different division who was there for a different purpose and it was not fun when I one person had to be on a client site at 7 am and the other person had their first sales call at 11 am and had stayed out until the bars closed.
The "worse" problem we encountered was that we would get in after a long day on the road needing to handle at least an hour of email a piece - and would have one hook in (in the pre-wireless days) and would have to fight over who got to check first (and thus get to bed earlier).
When we bought our division out, the first policy change we made was no longer mandating room sharing. My biz partner and I will still bunk together occasionally to be able to stay at a nicer hotel (one room at the W Lakeshore in Chicago at $350 vs. two rooms elsewhere for $220 a piece), etc. but we recognize that our team needs to have some life while on the road.
