I worked for a start-up in the '80s that had that policy, although they didn't require that employees of the opposite sex share rooms, or that smokers and non-smokers share rooms. At the time I resented it but complied. Now I would flatly refuse. I'll travel away from my home and my partner for the company, but I won't give up my privacy and solitude during non-working hours.
