I find it odd that they asked everyone to open the bags in calcutta.

I've flown through several airports in India and I find the security to
pretty efficient. I've seen them spot things that were missed at
US and european airport securities (in X-Rays)

But like every other airport security, I've seen some flaws there too.
but over all I've seen them do a very thorough job fairly quickly.
