This continues to be the hardest domestic upgrade in the system for me -- worse than elite-heavy hub-to-hub SFO-ORD and SFO-IAD.

This has been posted on before, but a quick search of "SFO IAD upgrade" didn't yield anything.

Have others had similar experiences?
Last Spring... way back when I was 1K and not in my current diminished position, I booked two seats ATL-SFO-ATL for travel late summer.

I requested an upgrade using CR-1s. I was waitlisted. First was wide open. All eight seats were available. Neither of my upgrades cleared at time-of-purchase, though, by flight time, both did.

I agree with you. I understand holding back some inventory, but whoever heard of an upgrade failing when the desired cabin is totally unsold?
