I've been pleasantly surprised by Howard Johson's (and they also have a slightly higher-end version). Drove from Boston to LA and back last year, and those were the best hotels I found for the walk-up price in the boonies (we pricelined city center hotels a few days out and were staying at Hyatts for like $70).
