Actually Montreal was awarded the games. But the organizers of The Gay Games wanted more money for the rights. Since the Montreal games were to be funded in part with government money there was the problem of tax payers dollars going to a for profit organization. Not wanting to lose the momentum the Canadian committee members who worked long and hard on the Montreal bid decided they would form a NOT FOR PROFIT organization that would promote LGBT human rights through SPORT & CULTURAL EVENTS. Thus.. The World 1st OUT Games was born.
