Understood. I wanted to see whether the kiosk would show me [later] standby possibilities for the day of flight, even when checking in the night before. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
In any case, here are the relevant quotes from a typical AA non-refundable fare rule:
"TICKET IS NON-REFUNDABLE. NOTE - TICKET HAS NO VALUE UNLESS PASSENGER CANCELS TICKETED FLIGHT RESERVATIONS PRIOR TO TICKETED DEPARTURE TIME. CHANGES CHARGE USD 100.00 FOR REISSUE."
"IV. STANDBY - PASSENGERS HOLDING CONFIRMED RESERVATIONS AND TICKETS MAY STANDBY WITH NO FEE FOR EARLIER/LATER SAME DAY AA NONSTOP AND/OR CONNECTING FLIGHT/S"
I'm now seeing the same contradiction as the posters above. You can standby for $0 for later flights. If you standby for a later flight without canceling the ticketed reservation, you lose the ticket. If you cancel the ticketed reservation, you pay $100.
I'm sure that the intent is to permit later, same-day standby so long as the airline isn't blindsided by the no-show. I just wish they'd clarify how the standby and cancellation rules interact.
