a lot of this is still down to GA discretion. sometimes you'll pay the change fee (AND an extra fee for fare difference) and sometimes not. be nice. also call the exec platinum desk if you're at that level--they will sometimes waive fees if you ask nicely. but best to always cxl the reservation vs just letting it lapse--too risky not to!
