To answer the question, though, I'm not really sure I have any favorite gates at IAD. My least favorite, though, are gates at the end of the C concourse where there is too little space for the number of bodies attempting to enter the jetways (however, on arrival from outside the US, gates near the end of the C concourse are my favorite, because it means less time walking through the narrow glassed-in hallways to the people movers a/k/a Moon Buggies for the ride to Customs and Immigration).
You think you have it bad - at STL we have the old fashioned plastic number signs next to the (not activated) plasma screens! STL gate A18 is my favorite, though I can't say exactly why - just seems nice being closest to the runways.
