Train was paid for in the UK - one of the agencies listed by
www.vr.fi on their website. Departed around midnight arrived at 7am or so. We slept in a two berth private cabin.
At Kemijarvi it was difficult to locate the bus stop to Pyha. We had a map, but everything was covered in snow and we hadn’t brought a compass. Temperature was -30 degrees celcius. Once located, bus took 2 hours.
Returned via bus to Rovaniemi and got a regular train (with seats – no bunks/cabin) to Tampere.
Return train fare including the one night in cabin was approximately 140 Euros
Total from Stansted:
flights: £30
Buses: £20
Train: £90
Total: £140
Cost to Rovaniemi direct with cheapest other airline: well over £500

Suppose it was your wish to visit Carcassonne. Airport Shuttle to La Dome in town 5Euros with a short walk accross the old bridge to the ramparts. No 10 from La Dome takes you to La Casino (1.1 Euros) with a busy roadside walk of 1km to Formula 1 hotel (28 Euros pn). Taxi from airport 30 Euros.
