Wow! That's incredible, especially since the bag seems to have actually made it to the airport. For all United knows, it might have just been stolen off the belt, as you suggested. I'm amazed that they gave you the full replacement value ^ when many others have reported difficulty getting anywhere near that for bags that the airline knows were lost in transit, while completely under the airlines's control .
