Well, LHR is a whole different story, thanks to Bermuda II.
Getting NYC-LGW or NYC-STN rights is a snap, as evidenced by airlines like Maxjet or EOS.
I for one welcome the new EK service, because EK offers a so-called Rail and Fly service with Deutsche Bahn which allows you to travel to the airport you're flying from for a flat fee. Given the timing of these flights, I could easily get on a train near FRA in time to make the HAM-JFK flight. And given EK's penchant for attractive fares, this may be a viable option on the FRA-NYC route.
Though that would mean I would have to give up the FRA-JFK flight on SQ.
All these difficult decisions... but I'm all for increased choice!
