Agreed. I've never had anything that I believed to be a genuine upgrade, and I've always had to haggle to get what I booked.
Never got any special welcome in Berlin, and elsewhere never received anything more than a letter from the manager (big deal, they do those in motels these days...) and maybe a bowl of fruit or a small box of three truffles.
Never had instant check-in: the Ambassador check-in desk is usually just a space to the side of the main desk. Thing is, the idea that staff just would just stand there waiting to serve only Ambassadors rather than ordinary customers is a nonsense. I only get an "Ambassador check-in" if there is no queue at the ordinary check-in. Like KLM's priority boarding system it exists in theory rather than practice.
I was once granted one paid movie, though. Can confirm it applies to all films
