Crossing the border by land is a lot less painful than going to the airport. No forms to fill, no security checks. And the border from Quebec to I-89 is usually pretty quiet, except for say Sunday afternoon when people are trying to get back to Boston.

Like others have said, make sure you tell the car rental company and have the required documents for the car.
