Also they have skating and dog sled events.

Or do a search on Algonquin Park. You could get to either Whitney or Hunstville by bus and try and get an innkeeper to help from there. Bear Trail Inn comes to mind. The park is the largest provincial park in Ontario and offers a vast amount of winter hiking and snowshoeing, and if you are really adventuresome camping in a tent in a Canadian winter.

Had thought of Collingwoood, but really it is so built up now, there is nothing remote in the least about it.

I think my idea of remote is probably a bit different to a Canadian's . To be honest, a small town somewhere with some shops will be fine for what we want:
Snow
Scenery
Hiking opportunities

But camping is out - I've only recently discovered the joys of vaccationing in colder climates. I'm half Spanish and thrive in blistering hot weather. MrLapLap doesn't and copes better with the cold. Frostbite is a genuine terror for me, so I'll stay clear of canvas! If there's a Sauna nearby, -20degrees C (-4 F) is about the limit of my comfortzone although I've coped with -30 C (-22 F).

Oops! Sorry to ramble!

I'll cetainly be investigating your leads. Thanks for your reply!
