While EWR is certainly not as historically relevant as JFK, I still prefer EWR and the PATH with a stop at the Exchange Plaza for the Hyatt Regency Jersey City to the AirTrain / Subway connection at JFK.
Getting a slot at JFK especially after 4-6 p.m. for the outbound TATL flights is very very difficult, only a little bit easier for the inbound time frame.
EWR is another story.
And especially during the summer schedule, off peak slots have to be utilised as well, NW used to run their 5th daily AMS-DTW service leaving Schiphol at 7 p.m. without any onward connections on the same day, but because of aircraft and slot requirements...
