Correct. SkyTeam partners can check in any pax at the beginning of a route for all segments -- even if connecting to another carrier. BUT, the entire trip must be in one PNR. If you book EWR-MAN-EWR in one PNR, and then MAN-CDG-MAN in another, then as far as either CO or AF are concerned, you're only flying them on the respective itinerary.

CAUTION when booking trips where you hold one ticket connecting to a totally separate ticket. If you miss your connection, keep in mind that the second carrier has no idea you're connecting, since the arriving flight is not part of the same PNR as your connecting flight. Not only will the second airline be less-likely to care and/or coordinate your connection, but they are NOT OBLIGATED to re-route/re-accomodate you due to a late arrival of a leg operated on a different ticket than the missed connection.
