Totally agree with the "watch Ryanair" bit. For more information, pop over to the Budget Travel forum where there are quite a few threads on Ryanair.

I just came back from Edinburgh and took Easyjet from Gatwick to Edinburgh. Really enjoyed my flight on Easyjet, good service, clean aircraft, on time arrivals. From Edinburgh to town u can take the airlink service which costs GBP5 for an open return. My ticket from LGW-EDI costs GBP43.98 for return, booked 3 weeks before departure.

I think train is a good option too. Brings you directly into the city itself. From what I understand, if you buy in advance, u can get one way tickets from London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley for GBP22 one way.
