er.....I could be wrong but British Airways last year made stupid about of millions in profit after tax through the job cuts etc, also, easyjet also made something like £20 or £30million after tax etc......

I should have been more clear. From time to time Airlines have made money but overall if you add up the cost vs the income in it's history of the industry is nothing but a big money loser. I was trying to think of another "mature" industry that has not made money and cannot come up with one? Nucular Power maybe?
