Japan and South Korea simply don't use the GSM system so no tri or quad band phone will work there. You CAN obtain phones that allow you to use a GSM SIM Card with the local networks in Japan but these cost a lot in terms of call charges.

I am not aware of any phone that works absolutely everywhere.
