The problem is that even if UA kept you in the sterile area and transfered you from the international terminal (where NRT arrives) to the domestic terminal (where YVR departs) there is nothing to keep you from walking right out the front of the terminal - thereby skirting customs and immigrations. Thankfully, the SFO operations run pretty smoothly so hopefully you won't have much of a problem.
