CDG Connection--US to Spain Question

The partner and I are considering purchasing tickets on AF for a trip this summer from Houston to Madrid. We are considering AF because the schedules are good, the airfare is very competitive, and we can earn Onepass miles on CO. However, after doing some searches in this forum, I see lots of negative opinions about the wisdom of connecting at CDG, and the customer support of AF agents. Now I know some of us on here tend to not like it much when things don't go our way, so I'll ask my question as a new thread and maybe I will get a sense of reality.

I can fly nonstop to CDG, arriving at 08:40am and depart for MAD at 10:30am. My questions are 1) Do we have to clear EU immigration and customs at CDG or MAD? 2) Do you think this will involve a long inter-terminal transfer? and 3) is this enough time to make the connection?

The return portion of the trip would involve flying DL n/s to ATL with a connection there, so there would only be the one CDG connection to worry about. Any thoughts on this plan?
