Also, I just saw this thread now - your first post mentioned priceline...unless you are using the feature to choose specific flights, I would never, ever use priceline for air tickets. They are fine for hotel and rental car bookings, but never use them for air travel.

The time period you outlined is good for 2 islands - or if they only want to see a few highlights, you could squeeze in 3 - but that would add some cost.
thanks a lot for you suggestions! They are not very active, it is mostly a beach holiday. The other week in the SFO area will be a lot of sightseeing. To my knowledge the volcano is the only 'must see' sight, but I am sure anything 'historical' would be of interest to them. $$$ is not too big of an issue, but I don't want to waste money on useless extras. The flights are defined on Priceline, so we would now the exact flight times. I have just today looked into some pricing of hotels in the 4/5* category on big island and found that prices are changing quickly and other airline options have emerged, since I checked last. I guess I will spend some time this weekend to nail down the possible options.
