1) Have a loved one on the ground take care of it for you

2) Don't sweat it, because upgrades on the JFK-SFO routes almost always clear, and you shouldn't have a problem at 71 hour mark

3) Make friends with a PM onboard and get him to help you with free Airfone call to SMS

Pick whatever method above you like. I bet any would work just fine.

4) This one's a bit more complicated: Make friends with a GA or CRC staffer while on the ground before departing. Mention to them your plight and ask, "If you have a moment at 605pm, would you try and put through my upgrade?" I bet CRC would be happy to assist... GA might be a harder sell.
