You have to watch out, pocked 'crime' is well organized in Lisbon. I have seen 'crews' several times on the (modern) tram to Belem and on the (old) tram to the castle on top of the hill.
You must be talking about the train to Sintra (beautiful place to go visit if you are in Lisbon). It is really not that bad as you had said when I was there last year. Just use common sense, keep your bags in view at all times, dont carry wallet in back pockets, etc etc and you will be fine.
I found more of the "pocket" crime in Italy especially with the gangs of little kids that came up to people wanting to sell them stuff while another member of the gang went through their pockets/bags.
Again, use common sense and you will have no troubles at all in Portugal.
