I am with jjpb3, at the rate you said you are flying, I would not hesitate to aim for CX MPO Diamond. Miles better benefits than KF Elite Gold definitely. Some CX Diamond benefits beat PPS' actually.
I have heard of Asia Miles members invited to join MPO without having to pay the joining fee. I myself didn't pay for it, but it was almost 10 years ago so I don't remember how I got it.
But just to be sure, I would not hesitate to pay the USD50 if I were you.
