Luang Prabang
We spent 5 days/4 nights in Luang Prabang in January, staying at 3 Nagas. Yes, the town is charming and quaint. The morning monk walk is a sight to behold and experience (don't buy anything from the street vendors). The waterfalls are touristy but well worth the visit (hire a covered van/car, not open tuktuk, truck or bicycle...the road is very, very dusty and rough). Cross the river and explore the abandoned temple and small villages. Hire a boat and cruise the Mekong at sunset. Get a $3 massage at the Red Cross for the experience, not the quality of the massage. We were glad to stay in the town, but that comes at a price...the early morning gongs from the monasteries and the constant crowing of chickens. One of our best experiences was a visit to local villages and raft trip arranged through Derek at White Elephant Tours. He's a good resource about the area so visit him at the start of your trip to get some bearings and ideas. 3 Nagas is probably the best hotel in the town but management needs better guest relations training. That being said, what we enjoyed most about Lao was the people, friendly, open and innocent. Shopping at the markets--same, same and not different! There are beautiful silks and fabrics being made in Lao by farang and sold in tourist-oriented stores in Luang Prabang, but hugely expensive. Enjoy your visit!
