Argh. This was all set as a gift for my parent'ts 30th anniversary gift, and now it's all going to heck. I thought I was being really forward thinking too! I guess other's are even more forward.
If it were me, I would hold off for the time being. For how long you decide, just to see if price decreases or availability opens. NYC always has good deals because of the immense competition, so I would tend to doubt you'd be stuck in a position where fares increase across all carriers and no award availability exists. If you can't find four award seats, maybe you can find two award seats and buy the other two? Or 3 and 1? or 1 and 3? etc. This way you can still save and use miles. Just a thought. I'd keep looking for a little while longer to see what happens, especially if you can get the seats you desire on the outbound and just have to deal with the return.
