Adding memory is more perilous than adding a hard drive, as there is more likelihood that you'll fry the memory or the motherboard with static, or crack the motherboard by applying too much pressure. I think you could handle a hard drive replacement.

Take a look at the dealdatabase forum on Tivo hacking. When I hacked mine (which included adding a bigger hard drive, as well as a variety of software patches that let me transfer programs to my computer), I recall being directed to a website that had a wonderful, step-by-step, even-an-idiot-like-me-could-follow-it instruction sheet.
