It was circa Sept 1998 --- The idea of going to DTW and not knowing what gate your plane would be at, or when it would even be there, left me with such a bad impression that I've never even thought about booking on Spirit since then.
Same logic applies to AirTran -- hate to think about many times I've been at airports like FNT and RDU and their flights have been running hours and hours late.
