I wrote to UA last week for the 3rd time, reporting the following incident:
I was at Gate 81, SFO on Feb. 27, 2006 at noon boarding UA 176.
My seat was in Economy Plus. After First Class pax were boarded, the gate agent announced that now SEATING AREA 1 pax are ready to board. So I proceeded and handed her my boarding pass, which clearly marked SEATING AREA 1.
To my surprise, she yelled at me: "YOU MUST WAIT". Then she forced me to stand by while letting other passengers go through. I saw that she totally disregarded UA rule by allowing passengers in SEATING AREA 2,3,4 to get on board. I was nearly the last to board. When I got on the plane, all overhead bin spaces were gone and I had to put all my carry-ons under the seat in front of me which greatly reduced my legroom, which made it a very uncomfortable cross country flight to BOS.
The flight was late, the agent mentioned above did not show any smile per my observation. Maybe she had a bad day, but how could she possibly treat one of your most loyal customers in such shockingly rude manner is beyond me. Further, disregarding SEATING AREA boarding preferences dilutes benefits for UA elite flyers and violates UA rules. Such behavior is totally unacceptable. Yet I did not want to make a scene at the gate.
This was the most humiliating incident for me in my entire 20+ years of flying experience.
