Well, with over 1.7 billion subscribers on GSM networks worldwide, it is pretty obvious why GSM is synonymous with "cellphone" In some countries "My GSM" means the same as "My cellphone"...

The US is one of the few (perhaps only Japan shares this???) countries in the world where GSM is not the nr.1 standard.
