Actually....Journey Control hasn't totally eliminated this method of checking Delta.com to see if upgrade seats are available.

While it does affect the displayed availability during "search by schedule" if one searches using "married segments" instead of individually.......once an itinerary is priced, Delta.com still shows actual upgrade availability on a "per segment basis".

This is one way that I knew that V class was available despite neither of my upgrades being cleared........until I called.
