I just partially answered my own question. The huge deposit request I got was on the BW internet site. Today, I called the BW 800 number and they told me that only one night's deposit is required. The agent said that the internet site and the 800 telephone number are "different things". Perhaps if you refuse their terms they back down. I know that hotel occupancy is up this year but THAT is carrying things too far!
