I studied in MAD a bit over a year ago for a semester and I bought my ticket via STA on AA ex MIA. Their fare had no change fees and was abotu 2/3s the cost of the same flights on AA. STA requires that you buy a membership card for about $25 or $30 but it was well worth the savings and I think the fares were $1000 and $1500 or so.
