Another option, right in the heart of Big Sur, is the Deetjen Inn. http://www.deetjens.com/home.htm. The place is by no means fancy but very charming and ultra rustic. There are no locks on the doors, and the least expensive rooms have shared bath. It is also the closest commercial lodging option to the Esalen institute where the cliff side hot spring, open to the public at 1AM, can offer an incredible experience.
